It’s amazing what you can find…

…… when you really start looking!

Regular readers will be aware that I am currently undertaking an online Rapid eLearning Development programme which is being facilitated by @robhubbard.

The programme is broken down into ‘Building Blocks’ with this weeks blocks centring around Analysis/Design & producing video content for rapid elearning programmes.

It was the video assignment that really got me thinking as I have ‘dabbled’ with producing video content in the past using my Flip camera and the Flipshare software that comes packaged with it, but have always wanted (needed) a reason to push myself beyond the rather simple content that it produces.

The assignment criteria for the assignment was:

Your video should include:Someone speaking, either straight to camera or in an interview formatAt least two shotsSoundTitlingThink about what you want to communicate in the videoThink about the types of shots you want to useQuickly storyboard the video by sketching out each shotIf you are shooting outside in the daytime you probably won’t need lightsIf you are shooting inside use one or two powerful lightsShoot your video and record the soundRecord multiple takesEdit and title the video using a video editor – we recommend some belowTitle the speaker(s) when they first appear Use simple transitions between shotsCompress your video for web deliveryUpload the video to YouTube, call it ‘Your Name ReD Video Assignment’ and add a link to it on the Videos page on the Network. For a tutorial on how to do this view the How-To Guide: ‘The Network – Add video’ on the Main pageAs a comment add:A description of the videoThe technologies and equipment you usedAny challenges you faced and how you overcame them and What you would do differently if you attempted the same project again

………… I wasn’t overly keen in doing this as previous versions of Movie Maker have been….. ‘disappointing’, however credit where credit is due, I was very, very pleased with the functionality of it.

Admittedly, I doubt that it will be the first piece of editing software that James Cameron will reach for when he undertakes his next blockbuster. But if you are looking for an intuitive, feature-rich and (if you own a Windows 7 PC) – free piece of editing software, then maybe you should take a look…

Anyway, the proof is in the pudding as they say, so here is my assignment submission. As always feedback is always welcome – at this point everybody becomes a George Lucas ;-)

Oh no, not another ‘getting started with mobile’ blog post…

…. well….. Yes and No.

“Yes” in so far as it is about introducing the concept of mobility into your L&D approach…

…. and “No” in so far as it’s not about a lengthy, decision riddled, strategic approach, it’s about simple, pragmatic approaches that you can adopt (and indeed may already be doing) that can help you get your foot in the door, prior to moving onto other things.

Most of the slides used in the screencast below were inspired by the JISC Mobile infokit by Doug Belshaw – so thanks to Doug and JISC for providing the inspiration for this.

An Elearning Design Reading List

books

Several things have led to me actually writing a blog post.  First, I’m home for two whole weeks straight (this alone is a small miracle).  I’m also relatively up to date with my inbox and to do list (much larger miracles). I’m also indulging in some productive procrastination (which is probably the real reason).

Anyway, I typically keep a list of resources when I teach the ATD (ASTD) Advanced Instructional Design for Elearning Certificate, and I keep thinking that I should put the list somewhere.  So here it is:

Blogs et al:

Presentations

Software Tools:

Branchtrack and Versal  - two interesting new elearning tools — can’t fully endorse them as they are still beta-ish, but interesting to look at.Quandary Examples – a free (and unsupported) tool for making branched learning games.

Research-based Resources

Behavioral Economics

Books

Immersive Learning

I have this great little shelf in the bookshelf app on my ipad.  It’s just books by people I know.  I feel genuinely privileged to know so many people with so many interesting things to say.

Some of them are drafts for books that are still in progress., but one that’s already out in the world is Koreen Pagano’s Immersive Learning: Designing for Authentic Practice:

immersive learning

It’s great, for a few different reasons:

Reason 1: The subtitle — Designing for Authentic Practice.  So immersive learning environments can sometimes be shiny objects.  Remember when everything L&D was going to start happening in Second Life?  Yep, that didn’t happen.

One of the reason’s it didn’t happen was because there was because the focus was on the technology (“Ooo – we can build a virtual replica of our corporate university!”) and not on the really interesting part — the possibility for high-context practice. We remember more if we learn something in the same environment where we will use the information, so virtual worlds were interesting for that reason, but that got lost in the hype cycle. Koreen rightly focuses on the real purpose for immersive learning – high-context practice environments.  It’s about the practice, not the technology.

Reason 2: The case studies – So, one of the problems with a lot of L&D books is that they are more about what can be done, rather than examples of what has been done. This naturally happens with new technologies.  When they were brand new, both mobile and xAPI have had to start with the possibilities rather than real examples, until some critical mass built, allowing for case examples.

Immersive learning suffered similarly for a long time, but if anybody is able to speak from direct experiences, it’s Koreen.  The book is worth it for the case studies alone. Lots of really good examples of use, with the kind of nitty gritty details you need to help inform your own practice.

Reason 3: Underwear Gnomes — how can you not love a book that starts with a really well-played South Park reference?  It’s indicative of Koreen’s overall accessible, entertaining style, which makes the book a really pleasurable read.

Learning Comes from Life

Life-is-beautiful

As I sit across the table from my dear friend B, after a gin that could sink the Titanic and seafood that makes me appreciate my tastebuds and Scottish shellfish, I realise just how alive this Learning thing is.

It’s really not to be contained in classrooms, training rooms, online……all organised, neat & measurable.

It happens when you connect the stuff that is happening in your life with the available information out there.

That’s why we Google.
We don’t know something.
We want to know more.

And if I set it up so that you will “learn” from me…. all I can show you is what I believe to be true.
What I have been taught, what I understand or what has resonated for me.
I know MTBI and Facet 5 and OPQ32.
I know Dialogue & Change Curves & Situational Leadership; Adaptive Leadership approaches based on complex systems, Emotional Intelligence, Maslow’s hierarchy…
The list of what I could pull out my “theory/model Swagbag” is endless

But most of all… I know my lived experience: my sorrows and joys, my highlights and shames, my successes and failures, my flaws and strengths.
It makes sense I would pull those out too.

Together, the Models and the Experiences have helped me explain the unexplainable:
How it is to be frustrated with someone I work with.
How it is to not fit in in the Team.
How ‘The Answer’ to the really easy problem gets twisted and dulled through politics and fear.
How it is to be faced with the complexity of a loved one who is sick or ailing.
How it is to be responsible.
How it is to work as hard as I know how & still find myself in the same place.
How it is to make a different choice from that which was expected.

And so, for me, it is this:
My friend doesn’t belong to a big organisation that sends her on courses. She is smart, funny, sharp and curious.
She makes her own courses.
She learns through her kids, through her interactions with other parents and School systems and Health care systems and work.

Models and training and Leadership Courses are useful and good; Academic thinking and the application of that can be eye-opening and necessary; Coaching to distill ideas and experiences is kind of crucial.
Of course we need short, sharp times put aside to see these thing and absorb these things and share them..…

..but at the heart of it?

Learning comes through life … if you let it.

"Ergonomics" training course: living in harmony with your screen!

More and more of us are spending time in front of a computer screen. For some people, the average is one or two hours a day, but for others it’s practically the whole day. Not to mention what happens when we get home…

Sitting correctly at your screen-based workstation is not just a question of comfort.

Back or neck pain, sore wrists, eye strain, stress... these are just some of the problems that can arise over the short to medium term.

The likelihood of such problems can be reduced by adjusting your workstation, its position or the organisation of your workload, which can be defined as part of a detailed evaluation of your personal situation.

However, there are a few simple actions we can take ourselves.

With this in mind, the HSE Unit invites you to attend the “Ergonomics” training course, which is aimed at everyone who works in front of a screen.

Combining theory and practical exercises over the course of half a day, this training session covers essential topics such as:

The risks associated with working in front of a screen (anatomy and problems);Preventive measures (ergonomic organisation of the workstation, positioning, equipment);Strengthening and relaxation exercises.

The course description and registration form can be found in the training catalogue on the Safety Training Service’s website or can be consulted directly here.

Sign up now! You won’t see working in front of a screen in the same light again!

More information about screen-based workstations here.

CERN Technical Training 2015: Learning for the LHC

AXEL-2015 is a lecture series on particle accelerators, given at CERN within the framework of the 2014 Technical Training Programme. As part of the BE Department’s Operations Group Shutdown Lecture series, the general accelerator physics module has been organised since 2003 as a joint venture between the BE Department and Technical Training, and is open to the general CERN community.

The AXEL-2015 course is designed for technicians who are operating an accelerator or whose work is closely linked to accelerators, but it is also open to technicians, engineers, and physicists interested in this field. The course does not require any prior knowledge of accelerators. However, some basic knowledge of trigonometry, matrices and differential equations and some basic knowledge of magnetism would be an advantage.

The series will consists of 10 one-hour sessions (Monday 19 January 2015 – Friday 23 January 2015, from 9 a.m. to 10.15 a.m. and from 10.45 a.m. to 12 noon), and will be delivered in English with questions and answers also possible in French. The lecturer is Rende Steerenberg, Deputy Group Leader of the BE Operations Group and PS Section Leader. The programme will cover: basic mathematics; transverse optics; lattice calculations; resonances; longitudinal motion; leptons; transfer lines, injection and ejection; longitudinal and transverse beam instabilities.

Registration is required for this course. Participation in all lectures is encouraged to allow people to gain the maximum benefit; registered participants will be invited and attendance will be recorded in their personal training records. If you are interested in AXEL-2015, please talk to your supervisor and/or your Departmental Training Officer. Register online via the training catalogue. It’s easy to learn good posture and correct movements at work!

Excessive and repetitive effort and incorrect movements pose a real health hazard, but we can all significantly improve our working conditions with a few simple actions that are easy to learn and put into practice.

The Safety Training Service offers a training course on this subject delivered by a certified external specialist or expert.

The one-day course, "Working Conditions – Manual Handling”, is open to anyone whose role requires them to manually lift heavy loads, whether regularly or occasionally. It contains some theory but is mainly practical and will teach you to identify hazardous situations and optimise your effort.

The scheduled sessions are in French but English sessions can also be arranged on request.

The course description and registration form can be found in the training catalogue on the Safety Training Service’s website or by following this direct link.

A breath of fresh air for cryogenics training

Whether you work full-time in a cryogenic installation or are required to handle cryogenic substances temporarily, you need to have followed the appropriate safety training.

Photo: Christoph Balle.

Two new training courses are now available in English and French at CERN: “Cryogenic Safety – Fundamentals” (at the Prévessin Training Centre) and “Cryogenic Safety – Helium Transfer” (at the Cryolab).

The first covers the content of levels 1 and 2 of the old “Cryogenic Safety” course. The second is a completely new course for CERN: it covers specific aspects of the transfer of liquid helium, such as the evaporation process of helium and the associated risks to human health (asphyxia due to displacement of oxygen), the colour code for gas bottles, etc. These training modules have been rewritten in response to the increase in the number of projects involving cryogenics and following various related incidents.

Both courses are taught “face to face” by Torsten Koettig, an engineer from the TE Department, and include a theoretical section and a practical section. In order to be able to take the “Helium Transfer” module, you must have already completed the “Fundamentals” module.

If you have any questions about cryogenic safety, please contact your Cryogenic Safety Officer (CSO). If your Department does not have a CSO, please address your questions to the HSE Unit: hse.secretariat@cern.ch.

For any questions regarding safety training, please contact: safety-training@cern.ch.

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions concerning:
